The Nichols Fire Department has one of the most comprehensive training programs of any department in New England. The use of guest instructors from the State Fire Academy along with career firefighters, and in house State Certified Instructors give firefighters a well-rounded education in fire suppression and rescue techniques.

Training is held every Thursday evening where firefighters study such subjects as Fire Behavior, Forcible Entry, Engine Company Operations, Fire Extinguishers, Building Construction, Search and Rescue, Hazardous Materials, High Rise Operations, Motor Pump Operator and many more.

In addition to the regular drill schedule, all three departments in town have begun a State Firefighter Level I course which is open to all firefighters in the town of Trumbull. In Nichols alone, there are approximately 40 State Certified Level I, and 28 State Certified Level II firefighters, which provides the community with unsurpassed fire protection.

The Nichols Fire Department has been very fortunate in the past year to have structures donated to us from the community for live-fire training. Training in these situations takes the firefighters out of the classroom and puts them in a controlled environment while giving them real world experience.

These training exercises are invaluable to the firefighter and ultimately benefit the community giving us the tools needed to get the job done quickly and safely.

Many members of the Department go on to be paid firefighters in neighboring towns having received the knowledge and training needed for the profession.
